Secure Wireless Networks

A wireless network allows employees to go wherever they are needed with the same secure access, whether retrieving e-mail while sitting in an airport or updating inventories from the warehouse.

Modern wireless products from enterprise vendors provide the security, scalability, reliability, ease of deployment and manageability available in wired networks to the wireless infrastructure.

Although in the past there have been concerns over the security of wireless networks, today's wireless networks feature comprehensive security capabilities, which, when properly used, allow employees to remain productive, whether in the office or on the road.

To protect against any potential security issues, modern 802.11 wireless communications have security facilities such as WPA (WiFi Protected Access), a form of encryption which provides security comparable to that of a traditional wired network. If the wireless network has information that should be secure or where access needs to be restricted then WPA or similar security features should be used, ensuring the data is protected at traditional wired network levels.

Traditional Virtual Private Networking (VPN) technologies can also operate over wireless networks in the same way as on traditional wired networks. This can provide additional security for sensitive data within an enterprise and also allow non-secure or public wireless networks to be used to securely access a company’s internal information (such as e-mail) remotely.
