Overview of VOIP & IP Telephony

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is the technology used to transmit voice conversations over the Internet.

VoIP means "Voice over IP " and it is quite simply a way of using an IP network to carry telephone calls. The network can either be an internal LAN or WAN, the public Internet or a dedicated network from an external service provider.

The primary motivations for doing so are cost and convenience as VoIP is often significantly less expensive than typical telephone long distance packages, plus one high speed Internet connection can serve for multiple phone lines.

Internet telephone software is available specifically designed to be used by end users. This means they can make low-cost national and international calls using a handset or headset which is simply plugged into a PC or laptop. It also allows them to make VoIP calls using a PC from behind almost all firewalls, for increased security.

One of the major advantages of VoIP and Internet phones is for homeworkers and telecommuters particularly those in remote locations or foreign countries. A single broadband Internet connection can provide Internet access, VPN connectivity to the main office and telephone service. Furthermore, calls are charged at a low rate for each call destination, irrespective of whether they are local or to another country and often irrespective of the time of day.

As well as a range of VoIP enabled networking products and IP telephony solutions Whitehelm can also assitance in the design and deployment of VoIP including areas such as Quality of Service and Bandwidth Management.
