Content Security Overview

What is content security?

  • It’s so much more than anti-virus.
  • It’s so much more than URL blocking.

Content Security covers an ever-widening range of issues. Essentially however it's about letting people use the Internet and Intranet e-mail and web - safely and effectively.

So, is it like a firewall?

No, not really.  Just like a passport control officer at an airport, the firewall is responsible for managing "Who" should be allowed in and out of the network. Content Security is more like the customs official and the x-ray machine, entrusted with controlling "what" is allowed in and out.

What is policy-based Content Security?

As the nature of e-mail and web communication increases, so too do the number and complexity of potential threats.  Organizations need to be able to establish and enforce policy-based Content Security policies to manage these threats.

Policy-based Content Security relies on an organisation being able to:-

Establish.. an acceptable e-mail and web usage policy,

Educate.. it’s employees on the policy, and

Enforce.. the policy with a suitable software solution.

In brief, it means an organisation needs to be able to understand and manage what data has been moved or accessed by whom, and to where has it been moved.

Sophisticated software solutions that can apply different Content Security policies to different situations are essential. Organisations must establish distinct policies to every object that passes through it’s network gateway, and enforce these policies per recipient, per department, to cover issues of both business and network integrity:

Business Integrity

  • Breaches of confidentiality
  • Damage to reputation through misuse of e-mail and web
  • Legal liability
  • Lost productivity
  • Pornography
  • Theft of data via e-mail or web-based ‘hotmail’ accounts
  • degradation in service

Network Integrity

  • data corruption and infection from e-mail-borne viruses
  • loss of network service from spam and spoof attacks
  • network congestion from system misuse
